Handwriting analysis is an important tool for ascertaining the mental competence of the writer of a last will and testament (as well as, powers of attorney and personal directives). For such handwriting analysis need not only lead to discovering forged testamentary documents, but also discernable signs that the writer was suffering from some form of mental disease or defect, such as Dementia, Alzheimer's, schizophrenia or psychosis. Although not conclusive as a medical diagnosis, it can be a powerful evidential tool where there is an absence of medical evidence, especially where the individual in question or persons with an interest in the estate sought to keep the person away from the doctor and getting a medical / mental assessment.
